Ordeal Outline
I. Friday
A. Elangomat Arrival At this time all Elangomats will be present
B. Elangomat Orientation Session to brief Elangomats on weekend's
details

C. Inspection of Camp Sites Immediately after the Elangomat orientation,
the Ordeal Chairman will take the Elangomats to the camp sites.
D. Candidate Arrival Candidates will arrive between 7:00 and 8:00.
E. Parent/Spouse Orientation Session to brief parents and spouses
on the Order of the Arrow.

F. Work on Totem
1. At 8:00 the Head Elangomat will ask the candidates to find
a stick from which they will carve an Arrow.
2. The Head Elangomat will explain the Arrow.
a. Signifies that they are candidates
b. May be worked on the entire weekend
c. Must be worn at all times until the Ordeal ceremony
3. After explaining the Arrow, the Head Elangomat will distribute
strings to them, which the candidates will use to hang the Arrows
around their necks.
G. Clan Assignment
1. While the candidates are working on their totems, the Ordeal
Chairman or his designee will sort the names of the candidates
into clans.
2. After the sorting is completed, the Ordeal Chairman will deliver
the names of the candidates in a clan to that clan's Elangomat.
3. Each Elangomat will announce the names of the candidates in
his clan and gather them together.
4. The Elangomats will then:
a. Have the candidates stow excess gear inside a vehicle or inside
the Admin. building. They only need:
(1) Ground cloth
(2) Sleeping bag
(3) Work clothes
(4) Rain gear
(5) Personal hygiene kit
b. They CANNOT bring:
(1) Books, magazines, or toys
(2) Watches
(3) Food
c. Inquire about any medical conditions. All conditions must be
reported to the Ordeal Chairman and his Advisor. Record any medication
and conditions in your notes as reminders.
d. Go through the Ice Breaker in the period prior to the ceremony.
e. Place them in a single-file line a few minutes prior to the
ceremony. Everyone must take his overnight gear with him/her.
H. Ice Breaker
I. Pre-Ordeal Ceremony
1. At the appointed time, Kichkinet will come for the candidates
and lead them to the ceremony site.
2. Upon arrival at the ceremony ring, each Elangomat will instruct
his clan members to leave their gear outside the ring. Kichkinet
will then lead them into the ring.
3. The Elangomats will accompany their clans into the ceremony
ring.
4. After the ceremony, the Elangomats will instruct their clan
to recover their gear.
5. Torchbearers from the ceremonies team will give each Elangomat
a lit torch.
6. Kichkinet will lead the clans to the camp sites.
7. Upon arriving at the camp site, the Elangomat will assign the
clan members their sleeping areas.
8. The Elangomat will proceed to pass out the "Spirit of
the Arrow" booklet
2 and have the candidates read it and think about it and booklet
1 and then go to sleep.
II. Saturday
A. Breakfast
1. At around 7 am, Kichkinet will visit each camp site
a. He will wake the candidates
b. He will distribute "Spirit of the Arrow" booklet

c. He will deliver breakfast to the Elangomat
2. When the candidates have arisen and gathered their gear, the
Elangomat will serve them breakfast.
3. After the candidates are finished, the Elangomat will pick
up the breakfast trash.
B. Kichkinet or someone else will come back to lead you to your
work project.
Follow the following checklist before leaving.
1. Make sure all the trash is picked up.
2. Make sure all of your clan's gear is safely covered in case
of rain.
3. Make sure all of your candidates have rain gear with them.
4. If time is left before the work projects, the Elangomats will
instruct their clan members to reflect upon their "Spirit
of the Arrow" booklets.
C. Work Projects
1. The Head Elangomat will instruct the clans on what they
are to do for their work projects.
2. During the work projects, the Elangomats will lead the candidates
and MAINTAIN SILENCE.
a. Do not get involved in too much of the labor. Pay more attention
to walking back and forth to watch the candidates.
D. Lunch
1. At the appointed time, the Head Elangomat will dismiss the
clans for lunch.
2. The Elangomats with the clans will return to their camp sites.
3. Kichkinet will bring lunch to the camp sites.
4. When lunch arrives, the Elangomat will serve his clan members.
5. After lunch, the Elangomat will pick up the lunch trash.
E. Work Projects
1. Follow the same checklist as you did at breakfast before leaving.
2. At the appointed time, the Elangomats will lead the candidates
back to the work projects.
3. The Head Elangomat will again instruct the candidates on what
they are to do for their work projects.
F. Clean-up
1. At the appointed time, the Head Elangomat will dismiss the
clans from the work projects.
2. At this time, the Elangomats will lead their clans back to
theAdministration building to retrieve their shower gear and Scout
uniforms.
3. After his clan has retrieved their shower gear, each Elangomat
will lead them to shower houses and allow them to shower (The
Head Elangomat will remind their clans to wear their Scout uniforms
after showering). The Elangomats will motion them to meet outside
the shower house after they are finished. The Elangomats must
emphasize to the candidates that they are STILL ON SILENCE.
4. After the clan has finished showering, the Elangomat will lead
them to the Admin. building where they will deposit their gear.
5. When his clan members have deposited their gear, each Elangomat
will lead his clan to a spot away from other clans, BUT WITHIN
SIGHT OF THE ADMIN BUILDING.
G. Coaching Session Upon arrival at their spot, Elangomats distribute
"Spirit of the Arrow" booklet 4, and instruct the clan
to reflect on the booklet, and then begin the Coaching Session.

H. Ordeal Ceremony
1. After completing the Coaching Session, each Elangomat will
bind his clan with rope for the Ordeal Ceremony. The Elangomats
will not be bound by the rope.
2. Kichkinet will go to each camp site and get the candidates.
Kichkinet will tie the rope of each clan to another clan's so
the rope is contiguous.
3. Kichkinet will lead the clans to the trail leading to the ceremony
site. The candidates will remain there with the Elangomats. When
he is ready, Kichkinet will return for the candidates.
4. The ceremony will proceed. The Elangomats will stand behind
their clans during the ceremony.
I. Dinner After the ceremony is finished, the Ordeal Chairman
will lead the new Ordeal members to dinner.
J. Camp Set-up When dinner is finished, the new Ordeal members
will be instructed where to set up their tents and be given schedules
for the rest of the weekend.
K. Activity Centers
1. When the new members have arrived, the Ordeal Chairman will
tell them about the Activity Centers and then allow them to go
to them.
2. During this time, the Elangomats and other Lodge members
present should socialize with the new members.
L. Interest Assessments
1. At the appointed time, the Ordeal Chairman will distribute
the Interest Assessments and instruct the new members to complete
them.
2. After the new members have completed the Interest Assessments,
they may return to their tents.
M. Cracker Barrel
III. Sunday
A. Breakfast At breakfast, the Ordeal Chairman will review the
schedule for the rest of the day.
B. Ceremony Orientation During this session, the ceremony principals
will review the Pre-Ordeal and Ordeal ceremonies with the new
members.
C. Order of the Arrow Orientation During this session, the Ordeal
Chairman will discuss the purposes of, opportunities of, significance
of, and future in the Order of the Arrow. Order of the Arrow flaps,
totems, handbooks, etc. will also be distributed.
D. Break Camp The Ordeal Chairman will direct the striking of
camp.
E. Dismissal After approving the campsite, the Ordeal Chairman
will dismiss the new Ordeal members.
Ice Breaker
I. Opening
A. Ask each candidate to give his name, rank, troop, where he
lives, and something unique about themselves..
1. When they are done tell them about yourself.
B. Ask the candidates if they have any medical conditions or medicines
that we need to be aware of. Write down any mentioned and give
information to the head Elangomat.
C. Give your clan some hand signals that you will use for the
Ordeal since YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TALK!
1. Move this way.
2. Stop.
3. Sit.
4. Read Spirit of the Arrow Booklet.
5. Quiet. (Finger to mouth)
6. Anything else you deem important.
D. Tell them to read their Spirit of the Arrow Booklet as you
wait for the Pre-Ordeal ceremony.
Coaching Session
I. Take each clan member one at a time away from the group out
of sight if possible.
II. Ask each clan member the 5 questions that Kichkinet asked
them. Remember to tell them they can answer.
A. Do you still want to become a member of the Order of the Arrow?
B. Why or why not?
C. Do you think you are really worthy to become a member of the
Order of the Arrow?
D. How can you continue to prove that you are worthy of membership
in the Order after this weekend?
E. What are your plans for carrying out the three ideals (W.W.W.)
of the Order of the Arrow?
III. Try to draw out their answers and make them think about them.
Questions
1. Do you still want to become a member of the Order of the Arrow?
2. Why or why not?
3. Do you think you are really worthy to become a member of the Order of the Arrow?
4. How can you continue to prove that you are worthy of membership in the Order after this weekend?
5. What are your plans for carrying out the three ideals (W.W.W.)
